As MRI Safety week nears, what do you feel is the most important aspect to your department’s MRI Safety practices? Do you see any room for improvement? Sometimes, as I’m commuting to work and I am doing the bus / subway / walk almost mindlessly, one thing I never do, is let my guard down. Although I may not always look up for people I may know or recognize, I am continually vigilant / observant / aware of my surroundings. Sometimes I have to switch subway cars to potentially avoid confrontation. Sometimes I have to walk around an obstacle / person / potentially unsafe spot.
In our daily world of MRI safety and screening, sometimes our days can feel mindless and going through the motions. One thing we can never do, is get lazy in our screening or make unsafe assumptions. This applies to surgical history, age bias, contrast safety, and the ever-present risk of metal in the MR system. Don’t ever let your foot off the gas pedal, no matter what’s playing in your ear buds!! Be the MRI Safety Hero in your department, not just this week ahead, but every day you’re working in the wonderful world of Magnetic Resonance Imaging!
